Lesson 1 of 22 · SQLite

The Crime Scene

Start the SQL murder mystery: filter crime scene reports with WHERE to find the murder in SQL City.

A crime has been committed in SQL City. You are the detective assigned to the case. You have access to the city's police department database.

Your Mission

Retrieve the crime scene report for the murder that happened on Jan 15, 2018 in SQL City.

The reports live in the crime_scene_report table. Dates are stored as whole numbers in YYYYMMDD form, so Jan 15, 2018 is 20180115.

Filtering with WHERE

SELECT * FROM crime_scene_report returns every report. Add WHERE to keep only the rows you want:

SELECT * FROM crime_scene_report
WHERE city = 'Boston';
  • Text goes in single quotes ('Boston'); numbers don't (date = 20180120).
  • Combine conditions with AND: WHERE city = 'Boston' AND type = 'fraud'.

When you find the report, read its description carefully. It tells you where to look next.

This case is inspired by the SQL Murder Mystery from Northwestern University Knight Lab (MIT License). The people and records in our version are our own.
